MEDITATIONS IN MONOCHROME
(Cloud Shadow Studio, Aug. 2025 - Sept. 2025)
Photography by Paul Aiello
Cloud Shadow Studio and Fine Art Gallery, of Wakonda, is pleased to announce a very special photographic exhibition of black-and-white and infrared photography, by Paul Aiello, of San Juan Island, Washington. Known as ‘The Ansel Adams of the San Juan Islands’, for his stunning landscape and maritime photography, Paul’s work evokes a sense of timelessness, tranquility and awe.
Paul is a native of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and 40-year veteran of the art, whose love of photography began as a young man thrust into the hostilities of war in a foreign land... Drawn to the beauty of nature, as the antithesis of human violence, he found solace through the lens, searching out beauty and peace in the natural world.
“My journey into… photography started in Vietnam… with me buying a Yashica 35mm film camera… just putting it to my eye started my emotional connection to photography, not as a hobby, but as a life's work… to record my journey, my emotions and my connection to the world around me.”
‘Meditations in Monochrome’ is a retrospective of his life’s work, with images shot in both film and digital formats, and featured locations from historic Gloucester, to the San Juan Islands of Washington state, to Inverness and Concord in the San Francisco Bay area of California.

Paul Aiello - Arist's Bio:
Paul is a maritime and landscape photographer, hailing from the San Juan Islands, of Washington state. A native of Gloucester, Massachusetts, his affinity for the sea is evident in both his subject matter and the places he calls home.
Now, a long-time resident of Friday Harbor, Paul has felt at home in another small town firmly anchored in its history as a small fishing port, among the many islands of the Salish Sea. Paul’s adopted home, among these Islands, allows him to pursue his passion of black-and-white, landscape photography, where he finds many photographic similarities to his native home, in his quest to capture nature's serenity and solitude.
Paul is a 40-year veteran of the art, whose love of photography began as a young man thrust into the hostilities of war, in a foreign land...
Largely self-taught, and in the same vein as Ansel Adams' famous black-and-white's, Paul has continually pursued the natural play of light on the island landscapes. The stillness and tranquility in Paul's images reflect his lifelong love of nature and photography.
ARTISTS STATEMENT:
My journey into this medium of photography started in Vietnam as my emotional attachment to what I was seeing and feeling began with me buying a Yashica 35mm film camera, while there, and just putting it to my eye. This simple act was the catalyst which started my emotional connection to photography, not as a hobby, but as a life's work, albeit selfishly at the time, to record my journey, my emotions and my connection to the world around me.
It didn't take long for me to find my true calling of "landscape Photography" which I have now recorded for over 40 years, leaning toward black and white capture, along with Infrared capture of black and white, both on film and digitally.
I have found digital photography to be both a curse and a blessing. Getting instant feedback on a digital camera is like being hooked on some kind of fake high... You just keep shooting away and pick the best shot, usually produced by that little computer. Shooting film, on the other hand, slows one down to visualize, like Ansel Adams’ famous line of "Pre-visualization" to feel, contemplate, get connected to what you see and, more importantly, what you feel. I can look back on ALL my photographs and know "exactly" how I "felt" taking that picture.
To me photography is more emotional than physical (just pushing down that shutter button and getting "instant" results). Today, anyone can take a "pretty picture". It's your emotional attachment to what you are capturing that makes photography all worthwhile.
